Dylan staggered into the tea shop, clutching his stomach like a woman in labour.
âWhat happened to you?â Jock asked.
He had a face like a bruised banana. His eyes were red and bloodshot and his nose was purple and swollen.
âI think somebody slipped a hangover in my drink.â
He sat down gingerly as if he thought bits would come off him.
âThat bad?â
âItâs my stomach,â Dylan moaned. âRight now, I canât trust my arse with a fart.â
Jock inched his chair away a little.
âYou look as rough as the bottom of a bird cage,â Angie said, her arms folded.
âRougher,â Dylan said.
âRight, Iâm making you a cup of my special tea.â
âOh no! Iâm feeling better already!â
But there was no arguing with Angie. He turned his head to look at Jock. âStop blinking, will you? Youâre giving me a headache.â
Jock watched him carefully. He looked rather pathetic, lying back against the edge of his seat.
Angie returned with an extremely pungent brew. âNow drink this down.â
âWhatâs in that?â Jock asked, covering his nose with his hand.
âAh, you know. Eye of newt, wart of toad.â
âAll I need is a little hair of the dog!â
âJust get it down your neck. Go on. Not a word out of you till you do.â
Dylan did as he was told.
âWhat happened?â Jock asked. âI thought you were immune to hangovers.â
Dylan laid a hand on his shoulder. âNone of us are immune, my friend. We are all but soldiers in the fight against sobriety.â
âYou go home to bed now,â Angie said when he had drunk the last of the vile concoction. âGo on with you and donât come back till thereâs a splash of colour in those cheeks.â
âYouâre a hard woman!â Dylan muttered.
âWell, youâve no one but yourself to blame.â
Jock watched as he stomped out the door. Whatever was going on with Dylan, it would have to wait.
âWhereâs Simon today?â he asked.
âHeâs off visiting the Museum of Agriculture with Anthony.â
Poor Anthony.
âHeâs still off work, then?â
âItâs half term this week, so heâs hoping things will have died down by the time he goes back.â
âItâs not fair.â
âToo right it isnât! The things theyâve written about him in the papers. Theyâve just decided heâs guilty, even though they donât know the first thing about him.â
âMaybe he should sue.â
âThatâs what I keep telling him, but heâs not interested. He just wants it all to go away.â
It would probably never go away, Jock thought. If the police didnât know that Sapphire might be Gertrude, they might not be looking in the right places. He thought again about how Dylan had reacted when he suggested telling Stavely. What if he was wrong? Or worse still, what if there was a reason he didnât want the police involved?
Simon came in a bit later. Anthony trotted at his side, firing questions at him.
âWhat were the police cells like? Were they all dark and dingy?â
âI think youâre getting confused with dungeons,â came Simonâs reply.
âDid you have to sleep on the floor?â
âYes, but only because they couldnât find a mattress big enough for me.â
âDid you have to share the cell with criminals?â
âNo.
